Romania begins shutdown of nuclear plant's 2nd reactor amid low water levels on Danube River

Romania has initiated the shutdown of the second reactor at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant due to critically low water levels in the Danube River. The facility, which provides approximately 20% of the nation's electricity, previously shuttered its first reactor in late July as a result of similar environmental conditions.

The operational suspension follows a period of record-low water levels caused by sustained high temperatures and insufficient rainfall. Officials do not anticipate restarting the plant within the next 10 days as the region continues to grapple with the impact of these climate-driven water shortages.
