Russia and China veto US proposal for UN experts to keep monitoring sanctions on Iran

Russia and China exercised their veto power at the United Nations Security Council on Thursday to block a U.S.-led resolution. The proposal sought to authorize a panel of UN experts to continue monitoring international sanctions reimposed on Iran last year regarding its nuclear program. Despite the veto, the underlying sanctions against Iran remain in effect.

Following the vote, Iran’s UN mission publicly thanked Russia and China for their actions. The Iranian mission characterized the U.S. proposal as a cynical attempt to manipulate the Security Council for political objectives, framing the veto as a necessary intervention against the abuse of international diplomatic processes.
