Russia and China veto US proposal for UN experts to keep monitoring sanctions on Iran

Russia and China have vetoed a United States-sponsored resolution in the United Nations Security Council that proposed extending the mandate for UN experts to monitor sanctions on Iran. Despite securing 11 votes in favor from the 15-member council, the measure was defeated due to the opposing vetoes from two of its permanent members.

While the monitoring mechanism was blocked, the underlying UN sanctions previously imposed on Iran over its nuclear program remain in effect. The defunct resolution aimed to authorize experts to continue overseeing the restrictions that were reimposed on Tehran last year.
