Scientists hope deeper-rooted soybeans can withstand climate extremes and store more carbon

Research scientists in Champaign, Illinois, are studying a newly observed variety of soybean plants featuring roots that slope straight down into the soil rather than growing outward to the side like typical plants. Research scientist Ashish Rajurkar was observed examining the root systems by lifting soil-tangled clods from the earth.

Investigators hope that these deeper-rooted soybean plants will be better equipped to withstand severe climate extremes. Additionally, researchers anticipate that the extended root systems have the potential to store greater amounts of carbon in the soil.
