Congress proposes zero VAT and free tolls to rebuild areas affected by the earthquake

Following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Monday, August 10, 2026, that heavily impacted regions including Quibdó, Cali, Manizales, Pereira, and Armenia, legislative debates have begun in Congress regarding reconstruction funding. Proposed measures by lawmakers include implementing a zero-rate value-added tax (IVA) and making tolls free to aid the recovery of the affected areas.

In a separate seismic event, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the municipality of Cd Hidalgo, Chiapas, on August 12 at 18:23 hours. According to preliminary data from the National Seismological Service (SSN), this tremor struck at a depth of 10.0 kilometers and approximately 136 kilometers southwest of the city.
