Renewable energy does not eliminate dependence on the US: Sheinbaum keeps the fracking option open in Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated during a recent morning press conference that the country's transition to renewable energy is insufficient to eliminate its reliance on natural gas imports from the United States. Consequently, she defended the continued viability of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as a necessary component of Mexico's energy strategy to address supply dependencies.

During the same session, Sheinbaum addressed inquiries regarding whether the findings of a specialized committee on fracking constitute the fulfillment of a campaign pledge to ban the practice. She denied having made a formal promise to prohibit fracking, though reports indicate that this assertion conflicts with documentation from her 2024 presidential campaign.
