Greek port authorities arrested a 53-year-old captain of a cargo-passenger ferry in Keratsini after an inspection uncovered excess passengers and safety violations involving the transport of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officers from the Keratsini Port Authority arrested the captain during midday for allegedly breaching his professional duties. The case emerged following an anonymous complaint about irregular loading procedures and the transport of more passengers than permitted.
The vessel had already departed from port and was heading towards Mykonos, Kos and Rhodes when authorities ordered it to return to the New Molos Drapetsonas pier for inspection. During the inspection, Greek Coast Guard officers found that the vessel was carrying 15 vehicle escorts, exceeding the approved limit of 12 passengers. Authorities also discovered three tanker vehicles carrying LPG that had been placed inside an enclosed area of the ship instead of an open designated space, violating applicable safety regulations for hazardous cargo transport.
Following the inspection, the cargo-passenger vessel was completely unloaded and underwent a new loading process in accordance with required safety procedures. The ship was then cleared to continue its scheduled route after authorities confirmed compliance with transport regulations. A case file has been prepared against the 53-year-old captain under Article 235 of the Code of Public Maritime Law.
