SABC News South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the department has placed contracts belonging to Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama under legal review. Creecy says the viral video in which Mudzinganyama is threatening to shoot and kill a group of women in the powder room of the establishment, left her shocked. In the video he also inferred that his wealth would protect him against any consequences.
Mudzinganyama appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was postponed to the 15th of October. After the video started making the rounds, he was arrested and appeared in court on Thursday. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) added several charges to the controversial businessman’s charge sheet.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago elaborates, “At the time he went to the court, he only had one charge of intimidation and now there are 10 charges. And we felt that, in the interest of justice, he has to apply for bail. We requested a R5 000 bail, and for the seriousness of the matter, the magistrate decided on R15 000 bail.” Kganyago says the State has a strong case against Mudzinganyama.
“When we bring matters to the court, we always believe that we have a case. We therefore have to present our case inside court to the magistrate, and the magistrate will then decide. The matter has now been transferred to the regional court on the 15th of October.” Creecy says the incident was shocking.
“We have placed all his contracts under legal review and that process is ongoing at the moment. We don’t have yet a formal outcome. And of course, we are also introducing new criteria in the awarding of tenders and people who are implicated in gender-based violence, those people will not get tenders from our department going forward,” adds the Minister.
