Scientists have confirmed that a wayward SpaceX rocket booster slammed into the moon at approximately 8,700 kilometers per hour (5,400 miles per hour). The collision occurred on Wednesday after the rocket had spent the past year drifting off course following the launch of a pair of lunar landers.

Although direct visual confirmation of the impact moment was not captured, astronomers in Chile utilized a telescope to spot the resulting debris plume, providing the evidence necessary for scientists to declare themselves "100%" certain of the impact's occurrence.
