Spain begins border checks on travellers from Italy amid migration showdown

Spain has introduced temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, escalating a diplomatic and migration dispute between the two European Union partners. The measure, which began on Saturday, follows a similar decision previously enacted by Italy.

The cross-border restrictions are part of an ongoing showdown over migration management within the EU. This friction follows a significant influx of more than 70,000 migrants who crossed into Spain's Ceuta enclave from Morocco, many of whom subsequently travelled onward.
