NewzBERLIN (AP) — A military aircraft crashed near a U.S. air base in western Germany on Tuesday, injuring one person, the local district said in a statement. “Following a plane crash in the vicinity of U.S.
Air Base Spangdahlem, fire and emergency response teams from the Eifel District of Bitburg-Pruem were dispatched to the scene,” the district said on its website, adding that one person had been injured. It was not clear if the aircraft that crashed belonged to the German or U.S. The district referred questions to the U.S.
base, which was not immediately available for comment. Spangdahlem is home to an F-16 fighter jet squadron with about 20 aircraft, the German news agency dpa reported. Air Force and NATO missions worldwide, is the centerpiece of the air base.
The base has about 5,000 military and civilian employees, plus their family members, according to the latest figures. air base also employs between 700 and 800 Germans. The Spangdahlem Air Base is located in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Local authorities said that first responders were helping at the scene but that they could only comment in a limited capacity.
