St Mary man charged with murder of 64-y-o labourer

ST MARY, Jamaica—A St Mary man has been slapped with several charges in connection with the murder of 64-year-old Clifton Campbell, a labourer of Donnington, Gayle, St Mary. He has been identified as 22-year-old Dwight Campbell, otherwise called ‘Cardo,’ of Cox Piece district, St. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in the Donnington, Gayle area between Monday, August 31, and Thursday, September 3.

According to reports from the Port Maria Police, Clifton was last seen at his residence at approximately 5:00 pm on the Monday.. A concerned relative, after not seeing or hearing from Clifton, went to his home to check on him. Upon arrival, the relative reportedly discovered his body lying face down along a pathway leading to the house.

The police were alerted and responded to the scene. Clifton’s body was reportedly found with burn marks and in a state of decomposition. He also appeared to have sustained chop wounds to his neck, back and right wrist, with the wrist almost severed.

The scene was processed by the police, and the body was subsequently removed to the morgue pending a post-mortem examination. As the investigation continued, Campbell was identified as a suspect. He was later apprehended during a targeted operation at his home.

Following a caution statement and an interview conducted in the presence of his attorney, Campbell was formally charged with: murder, robbery with aggravation, doing an act to pervert the course of justice, attempting to prevent the lawful burial of a corpse, attempting to dispose of a corpse, and misprision of felony.
