Strong winds and heavy rainfall affected many areas of Greece on Friday, including Attica during the afternoon hours. Significant lightning activity was also recorded, along with local hailstorms in places. The Regional Operations Centres of the Fire Service received more than 200 calls across the country.
Most of them concerned fallen trees, flooded roads, water pumping and the removal of objects. The majority of the calls came from Attica. In Piraeus, strong winds caused scaffolding on a residential building to collapse, temporarily closing traffic on Gr.
According to the latest update from the Fire Service, a total of 216 calls were received nationwide due to the strong winds and rainfall. Data from the automatic weather station network of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr showed the highest rainfall amounts in Thessaly, Central Greece (including Evia and Attica), as well as parts of the Peloponnese, Epirus and Macedonia (particularly Halkidiki).
By 20:00 local time, the highest rainfall was recorded at Palaiochori in Fthiotida with 40.2 mm, followed by Narthaki in Larissa (39.8 mm) and Amfikleia (39.2 mm). Satellite data from the European organisation EUMETSAT (Meteosat-12) recorded more than 55,000 lightning strikes over the Greek region by 19:50 local time, roughly half of which occurred over land. According to Meteo/NOA, the weather system is moving eastwards and is expected to affect the islands of the central and northern Aegean during the evening hours, though with significantly reduced intensity.
