Stronger public, private sector support urged for NAPA

Former senator and ex-federal minister Javed Jabbar has called for stronger public and private sector support to ensure the long-term sustainability of the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), saying the institution has reached a stage where it can expand its role in Pakistan's cultural landscape. Speaking to the media in his capacity as a member of NAPA's Board of Directors, Jabbar said the academy had built a solid foundation over the past two decades but warned that future growth would depend on broader institutional and financial backing. "What we have achieved over the past twenty years can now be expanded on a much broader scale," he said, adding that while continued government support remained important, greater participation from the private sector was equally essential.

Jabbar argued that patronage of the arts should extend beyond attending performances and events, urging businesses and philanthropists to provide sustained financial and institutional support. He noted that Pakistan has a long tradition of charitable giving in sectors such as healthcare and education, and said the performing arts deserved similar recognition and investment. Looking ahead, Jabbar said NAPA would also need to adapt to rapid technological changes shaping the media and entertainment industries.

He stressed the importance of regularly updating the academy's faculty and curriculum so that students are equipped with skills relevant to the evolving creative sector. He also emphasised that students have a responsibility alongside the institution. While NAPA provides opportunities for learning and professional development, he said students should not take those opportunities for granted and must maintain the discipline and commitment required to succeed in the performing arts.

NAPA was established in 2005 as an institution to conserve and teach performing arts and music. At NAPA, the students of music derive benefit from being taught by a faculty consisting of practicing musicians, musicologists and visiting maestros. They will also have the opportunity to enrich their repertoire of compositions and styles by tutelage under many teachers.

The Theatre Arts department will offer students academic courses in all aspects of the theatre as well as practical exploration and the opportunity to present their work before an audience. NAPA has also introduced lessons in Make-up.…
