Syria bets on tourism revival, but visitor surge faces test of security, services

Syria's Tourism Ministry reported receiving 3.52 million visitors during the first half of 2026, marking a 111 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Despite the significant surge in visitor numbers, the revival of the country's tourism sector faces ongoing challenges related to security and the quality of services.

An analysis of the incoming traffic reveals that the vast majority of these visitors were Syrian expatriates returning to the country rather than foreign tourists. This distinction highlights that while the raw numbers of entries have doubled, the broader international tourism market has yet to fully engage with Syria's recovery efforts.
