Almost all of Taiwan shut down on Friday with the approach of Typhoon Champi, which was already bringing strong winds and torrential rain, and, while weakening, could still make direct landfall on the island. Taiwan has closed shops and schools as Typhoon Champi nears, resulting in evacuations and flight cancelations. The typhoon is expected to pass northeast Taiwan, moving toward China and Japan.

Taiwan shut down schools and grounded hundreds of flights as Typhoon Champi hit the island. One person has died after being swept away by waves in Taiwan's Liuqiu island, authorities say.
