Middle east live: Tanker struck by 'unknown projectile' off Oman, British maritime agency says

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported two maritime incidents off the coast of Oman on Saturday. In one of these events, a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The first incident occurred approximately 11 nautical miles northeast of the Omani town of Lima.

These incidents take place at a strategic shipping chokepoint that has experienced heightened tension. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point for regional instability, with reports noting that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have previously stopped or attacked vessels attempting to transit the area. The region continues to be a site of geopolitical competition between the United States and Iran regarding control of these vital shipping lanes.
