NewzWASHINGTON: TANZANIA is seeking to strengthen its understanding of nuclear energy technologies as the country advances preparations for its nuclear power programme. The Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi arrived in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, to participate in the inaugural Ministerial Meeting for the launch of the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) programme, taking place on August 26 and 27.
Upon his arrival, Mr Ndejembi was received at the Tanzanian Embassy in Washington D.C. The ATLAS programme is a new initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at promoting the safe, secure and sustainable use of nuclear technologies in maritime activities, including nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear power plants. The meeting provides Tanzania with an opportunity to learn and exchange experience on advances in nuclear technology, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as the legal, policy, regulatory, safety and institutional frameworks required to ensure their safe and effective use. The discussions are also expected to expose Tanzania to emerging applications of nuclear technology and international best practices as the country considers the role of nuclear energy in its future electricity generation mix. Minister Ndejembi is accompanied by Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Simon Songe, members of the committee, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Felchesmi Mramba, as well as officials from the Ministry of Energy and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).
