DAR ES SALAAM: EFFORTS to develop swimming in Tanzania have received a major boost following the launch of a special training programme aimed at improving the skills of swimmers, coaches and parents while raising the country’s competitiveness in the sport. As part of the initiative, Monti International School has brought in American swimming coach Ben Lee, who has extensive experience coaching at the NCAA and Olympic levels, to conduct specialised training sessions. Speaking to journalists after welcoming the coach, Monti International School Director Fatma Fernandez said the initiative is designed to elevate the standard of swimming in Tanzania and position the country as a regional hub for the sport in East Africa.
She said Lee’s visit comes as Tanzania prepares for several international competitions, including the CANA Zone 3 Championships, where about 40 Tanzanian swimmers are expected to compete. Fernandez said the programme has been structured to benefit three key groups—coaches, parents and swimmers—to promote a broader understanding and development of the sport. Coaching clinics will run from July 28 to 30, to 7, and advanced training from August 10 to 14.
She added that the coaching clinics will be offered free of charge despite the cost of bringing the international coach to Tanzania being fully covered by Monti International School. All coaches registered with the Tanzania Swimming Association have been invited to participate. The sessions will be held at Monti International School in Mikocheni from 8:00 a.m.
Meanwhile, Tanzania Swimming Association Technical Director Amina Mfaume Chama described the programme as an important step in the growth of swimming in the country, saying it will enhance the capacity of both swimmers and coaches and improve Tanzania’s performance in international competitions.
