BUSAN: THE Tanzanian government has outlined a series of measures it is implementing, in collaboration with UNESCO, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and other international partners, to ensure the Ngorongoro Conservation Area retains its World Heritage status while improving the livelihoods of local communities. The initiatives were presented during a special seminar organised by Tanzania on the sidelines of the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, currently underway in Busan, Republic of Korea. The seminar brought together ambassadors and representatives from 36 countries, traditional leaders, officials from international organisations, representatives of non-governmental organisations, conservation experts and other stakeholders in world heritage conservation.
Opening the seminar, Tanzania’s Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Saidi Yakubu, said the country believes sustainable conservation of World Heritage Sites depends on transparency, constructive dialogue and close cooperation between governments, communities living around protected areas and the international community.
