In recent months, advanced AI systems have demonstrated an impressive ability to solve difficult mathematical problems, generate computer code, assist scientists in proving mathematical theorems and even perform exceptionally well in mathematics competitions. These achievements have sparked an intriguing debate: Has AI reached a point where humanity no longer needs mathematics?

For many people, the answer may appear to be “yes.” After all, if an AI system can solve equations within seconds that would take a student or even a mathematician hour, what role is left for mathematics? The reality, however, is very different. Rather than marking the end of mathematics, AI is proving that mathematics has become more important than ever before.

A machine that solves mathematics Only a few years ago, AI was mainly known for recognising faces, translating languages and answering simple questions. Today, AI systems can reason through complex mathematical problems, assist researchers with advanced proofs and support engineers in designing sophisticated technologies. Behind every intelligent answer lies an enormous mathematical engine built on algebra, calculus, probability, statistics, geometry, optimisation and many other branches of mathematics.

When weather forecasts predict rainfall, AI combines millions of mathematical calculations to estimate future weather patterns. Banks use mathematical models to evaluate financial risks.
