NewzTHERE is a conversation we are not having enough in the Caribbean. We spend plenty of time talking about jobs, entrepreneurship, technology, artificial intelligence and the future of work. But underneath those conversations is a fundamental shift: The skills we need to progress personally and professionally have changed.
Much of the advice many of us grew up with was designed for a different world. There is nothing wrong with that path. The problem is treating it as though it remains the only path.
In 2026 AI, digital platforms, remote work and the globalisation of services have created possibilities previous generations simply did not have. The challenge is making sure Caribbean people develop the skills to participate in them. Our Skills Must Follow The modern economy increasingly rewards people who can operate across technology, business and digital platforms.
So do digital communication, online research, digital marketing, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and the ability to continuously learn new tools. But perhaps the bigger shift is learning to see opportunity differently. Your next employer does not necessarily have to be in Jamaica.
Your next client may not even be in the Caribbean. They could be anywhere in the world. When your skills can be delivered digitally, geography becomes less important to your earning potential.
When your business operates digitally, your potential market becomes much larger than the population surrounding you. That fundamentally changes what a career or business can look like.
