NewzFrantz David Eugene was among a group of pastors who were planning to meet at the Haitian Evangelical Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon in North Miami to advocate for newly undocumented Haitians. The community leaders planned to call on lawmakers to restore the U.S. Temporary Protected Status that had provided a work permit and deportation protections to about 350,000 Haitians until July 27.Democratic Sens. Markey and Lisa Blunt Rochester introduced S.4814, legislation to designate Haiti for TPS on June 17.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer co-sponsored it. Attorney Vanessa Joseph, the elected city clerk for North Miami, serves as the chair of the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network. She has been advocating for the legislation.
“In Florida, we have reached out to Senator Moody, we’ve reached out to Sen. We haven’t gotten any direct responses about support for this,” Joseph said on Sunday during “This Week In South Florida.” Joseph said activists are also advocating for migrants with the Department of Homeland Security. “They have the power to do it themselves.
