To bring back historic herring populations, volunteers get down and dirty

Volunteers, including Wampanoag tribal member and land manager Marcus Hendricks, are working to restore historic herring populations in the Acushnet River. The effort involves clearing physical obstructions from the waterway, such as fallen trees, to improve fish passage and habitat conditions.

During a recent restoration event, Hendricks was documented removing a 10-inch thick tree that had fallen across the river. This manual labor is part of broader environmental initiatives aimed at revitalizing the local ecosystem and supporting the return of migratory herring to the river system.
