The Trump administration has indicated that the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., could face demolition if a court prevents the government from proceeding with a planned two-year renovation project. In a legal filing submitted on Monday, Department of Justice attorney Brantley T. Mayers argued that the facility is currently in a "decrepit" state and faces an imminent "death spiral" without the proposed intervention.

The administration's position is that the extensive closure is necessary to address the building's deteriorating condition. The threat of demolition serves as a central point of contention in the ongoing legal dispute over whether the performing arts center can be closed to accommodate the construction work.
