The new tariff will take effect 30 days after Trump signs the executive order and will apply to goods covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on free trade, an official said. The administration will use an untested legal provision to put significant duties on Canadian exports, reigniting a trade clash with one of America’s biggest trading partners. Last month, the Trump administration proposed that tariffs of 10 per cent or more be imposed on products from dozens of major trading partners after a probe into forced labour.
