Tung Chee-hwa, the first post-colonial leader who served as Hong Kong's chief executive following its return from British to Chinese rule, has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed on Wednesday by his office.

During his tenure, Tung navigated the complex political landscape of balancing the demands of Beijing with those of Hong Kong residents, ultimately making it clear that Beijing was in charge. His time in office was also marked by challenges, including policy blunders and mounting concerns over Chinese interference, before he stepped down in 2005.
