UK mosquito species may carry avian malaria, new study finds

In a landmark study, researchers have pinpointed certain mosquito species that spread avian malaria in the UK. Among twelve species analyzed, nine were found to harbor traces of this bird disease. Notably, the Ochlerotatus detritus mosquito is suspected to transmit Plasmodium vaughani to blackbirds, with additional species identified as potential carriers for parasites that threaten various native birds.
