Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday dismissed statements by Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim Al-Aboudi, who claimed that Iraqi authorities had arrested a Ukrainian-linked cell responsible for carrying out attacks inside the country. In an official statement, the ministry said the allegations were “groundless” and noted that no evidence had been presented to support the claims. It also pointed out that Al-Aboudi himself acknowledged during a televised interview that investigations into the matter were still ongoing.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Iraqi authorities did not communicate any information or concerns through diplomatic channels before the allegations were made publicly. The ministry said that if Iraqi officials possessed credible evidence, the issue should have been raised through official diplomatic mechanisms rather than announced during a television interview. Instead, Kyiv said it first learned of the accusations through media reports.
Furthermore, Ukraine described the public remarks by a senior Iraqi official as “unacceptable and irresponsible” in the absence of supporting evidence. The ministry stressed that such statements contradict the principles of mutual respect between friendly nations and risk undermining relations between Iraq and Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv reaffirmed that it considers Iraq an important partner in the Middle East and remains committed to strengthening political, economic, and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
The Foreign Ministry also argued that the allegations mirror Russian propaganda narratives aimed at damaging Ukraine’s international reputation and weakening its partnerships across the Middle East. Additionally, the statement suggested that the incident could have resulted from external information influence or formed part of a coordinated information campaign intended to disrupt Iraqi-Ukrainian relations. Ukraine called on Iraqi authorities to address what it described as unfounded allegations and to prevent state institutions from promoting misinformation that could serve the interests of third parties.
