Recent scientific findings regarding the evolutionary history of marine snails have revealed that a common ancestor dating back more than 60 million years could reshape current understanding of the group's development. By analyzing nearly 700 species, researchers detected a surge in diversification during the early Cenozoic era and identified four new families of Neogastropoda.

This discovery provides substantial evidence supporting a single evolutionary origin for these gastropods. The findings offer new insights into the evolutionary trajectories and diversification patterns of the approximately 16,000 known species of marine snails.
