Under-resourced AIMA system undermines immigrants’ right to a defence

Portugal's Bar Association, known as the Ordem dos Advogados, has issued a warning regarding the state of AIMA, the country's migration agency. The organization stated that severe operational deficiencies within the agency are obstructing legal professionals and jeopardizing the fundamental right of immigrants to mount a proper defense.

The agency's struggles are attributed to critical staff shortages, inadequate digital systems, and inconsistent administrative procedures. These systemic issues within AIMA create significant barriers for legal representation, raising concerns about due process and the protection of immigrant rights under the current administrative framework in Portugal.
