Uranium mines pose first test for state-recognized Mount Taylor cultural landscape in New Mexico

Native communities in the Grants mineral belt of northwest New Mexico have raised concerns regarding the potential harm posed to Mount Taylor by the resumption of uranium mining. These concerns center on the protection of the mountain's cultural and environmental integrity.

In response to these apprehensions, the state of New Mexico designated Mount Taylor as a traditional cultural landscape. This designation faces its first major test as proposals for resumed uranium mining in the region are considered.
