(2nd LD) Lee proposes dialogue with N. Korea to officially end Korean War, halt Pyongyang's nuclear program

On Saturday, August 15, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed opening dialogue with North Korea. The stated aims of the proposed talks are to officially bring an end to the Korean War and to halt Pyongyang's ongoing nuclear program.

The diplomatic overture targets two of the most critical, long-standing security challenges on the Korean Peninsula: the formal conclusion of a conflict that has technically remained active since the 1950s and the containment of North Korea's nuclear capabilities.
