US federal judge blocks New York’s ban on ICE officers wearing masks

On Monday, a U.S. federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the state of New York from enforcing a recently enacted law that prohibited federal immigration officers from wearing face masks and required them to display visible identification. U.S. District Judge Mae D’Agostino of the Northern District of New York granted the hold on the state’s mask and identification requirements for ICE agents.

The blocked legislation targets U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel operating within the state. While the court placed a hold on the mask ban and identification mandate, separate provisions of the state law prohibiting cooperation between local police and ICE were allowed to remain in effect.
