US lawmakers pass bill giving Trump more power to sanction Russia and its enablers

The US Congress has passed a sweeping bill granting President Donald Trump expanded authority to impose sanctions and raise tariffs on top buyers of Russian energy, as well as target Russian enablers.

The legislation has divided both the Democratic and Republican parties. Critics within the political parties have expressed concern that the measure endows the president with excessive power that could potentially be turned against United States allies.
