Venezuelans’ pride is bruised by deal to give US one-fifth of their oil reserves

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has agreed to a deal giving the United States control of approximately one-fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves, which are the largest in the world. The agreement was reached in Caracas, Venezuela.

For over a century, oil has defined the modern Venezuelan identity and national pride, with generations believing the country's bountiful resources belong directly to the people. Consequently, the agreement to surrender a significant portion of these reserves to the U.S. has deeply bruised national pride in the troubled nation.
