Victoria police apologise over death of injured man taken to cells instead of hospital

Victoria Police have issued a formal apology following the 2023 death of John Makai, who died after being placed in a police cell rather than being transported to a hospital. An inquest into the incident revealed footage of Makai struggling to stand after sustaining a serious head injury during an altercation in which he was punched by his son.
