Residents in Virginia can now add their driver’s license or identification card to Apple Wallet as part of the state’s dedication to digital services, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday. The ID in the Apple Wallet program lets users confirm their identity and provide their age verification by showing the requested information from their iPhone or Apple Watch without handing over their devices, a news release said. Starting Wednesday, Virginia residents can show their mobile IDs at checkpoints in 250 airports all across the country, including Dulles International and Reagan National airports.

Virginia residents can also use their IDs in Apple Wallet at all Department of Motor Vehicles sites throughout the commonwealth, as well as at ABC stores and select businesses. Virginia Secretary of Transportation Nick Donohue said that having IDs in Apple Wallets highlights a significant moment of innovation for the state, because it puts residents “ahead of the curve when it comes to both technology and protecting personal information.” “Our residents have been asking for this, and we’re proud to work with Apple to offer ID in Apple Wallet as a seamless and secure resource for Virginians,” Donohue said. Virginia DMV Commissioner Saundra Jack explained the importance of making identification simpler to carry and use.

“Virginians have been asking for more ways to do that. So much of our everyday life is on our phone, and now so is your Virginia ID in Apple Wallet,” Jack said. Residents can go to the Virginia DMV website for more information on how to set up their mobile ID.

Beginning Wednesday, Virginians can add their driver’s license or state-issued identification card to Apple Wallet.
