Remembering 9/11: When Gander provided safe haven in a time of crisis

Following the closure of United States airspace on September 11, thirty-eight international flights carrying seven thousand passengers and crew members were grounded in the small town of Gander, located on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

During the crisis, the local population virtually doubled as residents provided shelter, comfort, and hospitality to the stranded travelers over a period of five days.

The remarkable generosity shown by the Newfoundlanders during this time has left a lasting legacy, ultimately inspiring the hit musical "Come From Away."
