NewzKINGSTON, Jamaica — Windsor Wellness and Biovanta Labs have launched Jamaica's first at-home prostate cancer screening kit. The Kingston-based launch, timed to Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, targets earlier detection among Jamaican men. The device collects a small blood sample without a needle draw or a laboratory visit, testing for elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a key marker used in prostate cancer screening.
Results can be obtained at home, at health fairs or in a doctor's office. The technology has previously been deployed in the United States and the Bahamas, where it was used to screen 115 men during a single outreach event on Cat Island. That programme was conducted under the patronage of Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis and Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Michael Darville.
“Prostate cancer kills more Jamaican men than any other cancer, at roughly twice the rate of the second leading cause of cancer death among men,” said Dr Alfred Dawes, laparoscopic surgeon and medical director of Windsor Wellness. “Removing the barriers of needles, clinics and stigma means more men will actually come forward to be tested.”
