(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: A woman was fined RM12,000 by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to making and initiating the transmission of offensive communications insulting Islam three years ago.Judge Ilmami Ahmad imposed the fine on Yeo Li Yin, 48, who works part-time in the creative industry, and ordered her to serve 10 months' imprisonment in default of payment.According to the charge, Yeo was charged with making and initiating the transmission of communications of an offensive nature with the intent to annoy others via Twitter (now known as X) using the profile name "Liyin Yeo" on June 19, 2023.The post was subsequently viewed at Bukit Aman at 2.15pm on June 22, 2023.The charge was framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under subsection 233(3) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, and a further fine of RM1,000 for every day the offence continues after conviction.Deputy public prosecutor Nursyuhada Husna Sulaiman urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused and the public against committing acts that could undermine public order.However, defence counsel Ruzaini Zulkifli pleaded for the minimum fine, saying his client was remorseful and regretted her actions, and needed to care for her parents.“My client has also promised not to repeat the offence and has closed the account,” he said.
