NewzWorld Rugby has endorsed the Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s (ZRU) Interim Management Committee (IMC), giving the Paddy Zhanda-led administration a major vote of confidence as the country prepares for its return to the Rugby World Cup in 2027. World Rugby chairman Brett Robinson, who is leading a delegation visiting Zimbabwe, said the global governing body was satisfied with the work being done by the IMC, particularly its approach to governance and the development of the national teams. Robinson said World Rugby had spent time reviewing the committee’s governance structures and investment in both the men’s and women’s teams.
The endorsement comes as Zimbabwe seeks stability ahead of the Sables’ historic return to the World Cup stage in Australia next year, their first appearance at the global tournament since 1991. Rugby Africa president and World Rugby Executive Board member Herbert Mensah also revealed that discussions had already taken place with the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) over extending the IMC’s tenure beyond the 2027 World Cup. Mensah said the priority was to ensure stability before a new governance structure and elections are considered after the tournament.
“The extension talk came about during my last visit here in Zimbabwe. “It’s something still being proposed and we are still looking into it,” Mensah said. World Rugby’s backing represents a significant boost for the IMC, which was installed following governance problems at the Zimbabwe Rugby Union.
