Youthful JPL ready to showcase Jamaica’s next generation as 2026–27 season begins

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Premier League (JPL) is entering the 2026–27 season with a clear sign of change, as a new generation of young footballers prepares to make its mark on the country’s top-flight competition. According to registration data released by Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL), approximately 44 per cent of players registered across the league’s 14 clubs are aged 22 or younger. Even more striking, 104 players are aged 20 or younger, accounting for roughly 29 per cent of the league’s player pool.

The numbers point to an increasingly youthful JPL and underline the competition’s growing importance as a pathway for developing Jamaica’s football talent. PFJL Chief Executive Officer Owen Hill believes the opportunity is significant, with the league positioned to give young players the exposure and experience needed to progress to the highest levels of the sport. “The talent has never been our question.

Our responsibility is to build the platform that allows that talent to be seen, tested, developed, valued and ultimately exported,” Hill said. Among the youngest players registered for the new season are several 16-year-olds, including Jaheimie Gray of Cavalier SC, Nathaniel McCarthy of Chapelton Maroons FC, Xavier Gooling of Humble Lion FC, Javier Henry, Jedan Brown-Hamid, Rashaun Nicholas Williams and Samuel Taylor of Mount Pleasant FA, and Sean-John Curchar of Waterhouse FC. For these teenagers, the coming season represents an opportunity to train and compete alongside experienced Premier League players while beginning their journey in senior football.

Hill said the presence of so many young players creates the possibility of discovering the next Jamaican star. “Somewhere among these players could be Jamaica’s next international player, the next significant transfer for a JPL club, the one who captures the imagination of the country,” he said. The league is also looking to place greater emphasis on the stories behind its emerging players throughout the season.

PFJL says supporters will be encouraged to follow the development and breakthrough performances of young footballers rather than focusing solely on match results. The strategy forms part of the wider JPL 2.0 vision, which seeks to strengthen the connection between talent development, exposure, performance data, scouting and opportunities in regional and international football.…
