Zimbabwe’s senior men’s cricket team began its T20I series against India with a 7-wicket defeat at Harare Sports Club on Thursday. The Chevrons went into the match on the back of Sunday’s defeat to Bangladesh at Queens Sports Club, where they lost the three-match T20I series 2-1. Head coach Justin Sammons named a largely unchanged squad from the Bangladesh series, with only Ben Curran and Newman Nyamhuri coming in to make their T20I debuts.
After winning the toss, India elected to field first, sending Zimbabwe in to bat. The hosts were restricted to 125/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Zimbabwe’s top order struggled against the Indian bowlers, with Brian Bennett dismissed for a duck, while Ben Curran and Dion Myers managed just 10 and 6 runs respectively.
Captain Sikandar Raza also endured a disappointing outing, scoring only 4 runs from seven balls. Wesley Madhevere was Zimbabwe’s standout performer with the bat, top-scoring with 39 runs off 34 deliveries. India comfortably chased down the target in just 13.2 overs, losing only three wickets.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was the top performer for the visitors as he recorded a half-century from just 19 balls. The 15-year-old registered India’s second-fastest T20I half-century, helping his side bounce back after a disappointing series against England. India now lead the three-match series 1-0, with the remaining two matches set to be played on Saturday and Sunday at Harare Sports Club.
