KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jonielle Smith and Jodean Williams have qualified for the final of the women’s 100m at the Commonwealth Games after both finished third in their semi-finals on Tuesday at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, for the second straight staging, no Jamaican men will contest the men’s 100m final as Ackeem Blake and Rohan Watson both failed to get past the semi-finals. The heats were contested in heavy rain, and Smith ran 11.07 seconds (0.8m/s) behind England’s Amy Hunt, who ran 11.02 seconds and New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, 11.04 seconds. Williams had run 11.13 seconds (1.6m/s) in her semi-final that was won by Torrie Lewis, who ran an Australian national record 11.00 seconds, with Canada’s national record holder Audrey Leduc second in 11.01 seconds.

Blake was third in the third semifinal in 10.06 seconds (1.1m/s) beaten by South Africa’s Gift Leotlela- 10.02 seconds and Australia’s Edward Nketia, who ran a personal best 10.03 seconds. In the first heat, Watson was sixth with 10.12 seconds (0.0m/s) as Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon won in a national record 9.89 seconds, ahead of Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy who ran a personal best 9.94 seconds. Eseme led all qualifiers, followed by favourite Kayinsola Ajayi who is seeking to become the first Nigerian man to win the 100m at the Commonwealth Games.

Defending champ Ferdinand Omanyala did not advance after he finished sixth in the heat in 10.19 seconds.
