Early testing saves lives, prevents serious illnesses

DAR ES SALAAM: WE must admit it that good health begins with one simple responsibility: Knowing your health status. Many Tanzanians continue to seek medical attention only when diseases have advanced, turning conditions that could have been treated easily into serious health challenges. Regular testing and early diagnosis are among the most effective ways to protect lives.

Diseases often develop silently, with some showing no obvious warning signs during their early stages. By the time symptoms appear, the condition may already have progressed and become more difficult and expensive to manage. For example, Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) provide a clear example of why early health checks matter.

What may begin as mild discomfort during urination, frequent visits to the toilet or lower abdominal pain can develop into serious complications if ignored. Untreated UTIs can spread from the bladder to the kidneys, causing kidney infections and, in severe cases, life-threatening bloodstream infections known as sepsis. Repeated infections may also signal underlying health problems requiring proper medical assessment.

However, many people delay visiting health facilities, rely on self-medication or use antibiotics without professional guidance. Such practices can worsen health outcomes and contribute to antimicrobial resistance, making infections harder to treat. Regular health screening helps detect conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses before they become lifethreatening.

Early detection gives patients a better chance of receiving timely treatment, reducing complications and improving quality of life. anzania’s health progress depends not only on the availability of hospitals and medicines but also on citizens taking an active role in protecting their wellbeing. Visiting health facilities for routine check-ups should become a normal part of life, just like other daily responsibilities.

Modern health innovations, including simple screening tools, can encourage people to identify possible health concerns earlier. However, such tools should complement, not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis and treatment from qualified healthcare providers. Parents should encourage children to learn healthy habits.
