The FIFA president’s campaign has been marred by controversy surrounding a proposal to take aspects of the World Cup to private investors, which prompted swift and widespread backlash from football associations worldwide.
Attendance at the match just an hour before kickoff was scant, with barely any seats filled at the sporting ground. This is the first official match at the stadium since a record number of Jamaicans packed the venue to witness the possibility of the country booking a ticket for the 2026 World Cup in their Concacaf final round finale against Curacao. That match ended nil-nil, and the resulting draw left the Reggae Boyz in second place in their group, sending Curacao through to the World Cup.
They were forced into the inter-confederation play-offs and eliminated after falling to DR Congo. Five members of the Reggae Boyz team who lost in the final game of the failed World Cup 2026 attempt were named in the starting team to face Guatemala in their Concacaf Nations League Group B game.
