Ghana rejected MTN’s GH¢20m donation to sustain diplomatic pressure on South Africa – Int’l Relations Analyst

The Government of Ghana declined a GH¢20 million (approximately $1.8 million) donation from MTN Ghana intended to support victims of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. According to international relations expert Dr. Ishmael Hlovor, the decision was part of a deliberate diplomatic strategy to maintain pressure on the South African government rather than accepting what is viewed as back-channel diplomacy.

Additionally, the government stated that it has already made adequate provisions to handle the evacuation and reintegration of affected citizens. The refusal of the corporate donation underscores the administration's intent to handle the diplomatic fallout and remediation efforts directly at a state level.
