The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has renewed calls for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to account for decisions taken during his tenure, arguing that public confidence in governance depends on holding former public officials accountable regardless of political affiliation. According to him, every government must be subjected to scrutiny, particularly over the management of public finances, to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of state resources. Mr Amoah further suggested that unresolved issues surrounding the former Finance Minister’s tenure could become a political challenge for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
He maintained that Ghanaians deserve explanations regarding key financial decisions taken during Mr Ofori-Atta’s time in office, insisting that accountability should not be viewed through a partisan lens. His comments come as Mr Ofori-Atta remains in the United States while facing corruption and corruption-related charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). Through the Attorney General, the OSP is pursuing his extradition to Ghana over investigations relating to matters including the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts and the National Cathedral project.
Meanwhile, a United States immigration court recently granted Mr Ofori-Atta permanent residency after finding that the OSP had not presented persuasive evidence of criminal wrongdoing in the immigration proceedings. The OSP has, however, maintained that the decision does not affect the criminal proceedings pending against the former minister in Ghana. Speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, July 25, Mr Amoah said accountability must remain central to Ghana’s democratic governance and urged the former Finance Minister to explain decisions taken during his stewardship.
“If you are an NPP person, you should be worried anytime that this debacle continues to extend. Because, again, if you ask me to come 2028 to give you a mandate, are you bringing me a different finance minister or the same kind of crookish thing that was done?” he said. “The man should come and account to us.
