Iraq seeks US exemption from ban on Iranian airlines

The Iraqi government is currently engaged in negotiations with the United States to secure an exemption from a recent ban on Iranian airlines. The restriction, which is being enforced across all Iraqi airports, has caused significant travel disruptions for patients, students, and pilgrims traveling between the two nations.

The policy has created particular logistical challenges at the airport in the holy city of Najaf, which serves as a primary hub for Iranian flights into Iraq. While Iraqi airlines had previously ceased flights to Iran following the start of the Middle East conflict in February, the current enforcement of the U.S. ban has further complicated regional transit.
